Homeschool Mother’s Journal: October 12, 2012

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Homeschool Mother’s Journal. This week we are featuring Richele from Under the Golden Apple Tree.

In my life this week…

Lately the weeks have been flying by and this week was no different. My life this week
has been filled with completing projects on my to-do list, laundry, and planning lessons
specifically for my dyslexic student. I have personal trials in the background that move
me to distraction so every step is shadowed by a reminder I am holding the Lord’s hand.
Which, I suppose, is the bright spot and lesson in it all.

In our homeschool this week…

We had a week filled with hands on activities and life schooling. We took advantage
of the crisp and colorful fall days by exploring the changing leaves, apple picking and
geocaching. The kids are enjoying nature lessons, mapping, school lessons at the park
and all the hiking hours we have logged in this week. Recess has included soccer, since
my daughter plays and my son and I coach the team. A beautiful week but life is never
without fussing and fighting when kids…or humans….are involved. However, the rough
spots are teachable moments for all of us.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

Education should foster a love of learning and a confident critical thinker rather
than a machine that rattles off facts. However, it is most important to remember
that homeschooling is about raising the total child and not just academics. If all you
accomplish in a day is teaching good character, instilling a love for Christ, and showing
your children they are loved and valued, you have succeeded.

I am inspired by…

As of late, by seeing my son mature into a fine young man. Seeing him mentor kids on
the soccer team we coach and being a good big brother does my heart good. It inspires
me to purposely parent as I know every step is a step closer to raising well adjusted and
God loving adults.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We are finding ourselves all over the city geocaching these days. My son and I are
coaching my daughter’s soccer team, so we are practicing and going to games.

My favorite thing this week was…

My seven year old beaming with excitement when she discovered what her project
would be for the homeschool co-op’s science fair. She plans to amaze the crowd with a
voice activated light show she makes using circuits.

Things I’m working on…

I am currently writing two unit studies. I am writing a football unit study with the help of
my son and a modesty unit with the help of the Lord.

I’m reading…

Everything I can get my hands on concerning dyslexia. My seven year old daughter
was diagnosed with dyslexia at the end of the last school year. I am educating myself
on the best methods to fulfill her request that I teach her to read.

I’m cooking…

White Chicken Chili by my husband’s request.

I’m grateful for…

My two front teeth. Laugh if you must, but a friend of mine is going through a serious
trial and she said, “It will turn out fine, at least I have my two front teeth.” It made us
both laugh. When I think of it now it makes me smile and reminds me to be thankful for
the simple things that often go unnoticed. So yes, today I am thankful for my two front
teeth.

I’m praying for…

The election, my children, my ability to homeschool effectively, my family’s future,
finances, my readers, friends, and my husband’s grandmother who is currently ill. I
have even been known to pray for getting the best deals at the grocery store, finding a
lost item, getting to appointments on time, and even parking paces during bad weather
with little ones in tow.

Hello Richele! I have been home educating my son all along, but three years ago he was officially diagnosed with dyslexia. One of the biggest helps to me has been Susan Barton and the Barton Reading and Spelling System. She is a great resource too and has a website called “Bright Solutions” that you can find at http://www.dys-add.com that has many, many lists, articles, videos and information to help families with the challenges of dyslexia. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me! Have a great weekend!
